Macron Not Planning Washington Trip with Zelensky and Starmer, Despite Contradictory Statements
While government spokesperson Sophie Primas suggested that a trip by Emmanuel Macron to Washington alongside Volodymyr Zelensky and Keir Starmer was “under consideration,” the Élysée denied this possibility on Wednesday, March 5. The presidency clarified that no such trip was planned, contradicting Primas’ earlier statements following the Council of Ministers, where she mentioned a potential departure “in the short term” without providing a specific date.
Zelensky Invited to the European Summit
Meanwhile, the European Council announced that Volodymyr Zelensky would be invited to the EU leaders’ summit on Thursday. This “extraordinary” meeting will focus on strengthening support for Ukraine and establishing future policy guidelines. Leaders will also aim to take initial steps to bolster Europe’s sovereignty and defense capabilities in response to current and future security challenges.
A Tense Diplomatic Climate
On Tuesday evening, Emmanuel Macron praised Volodymyr Zelensky’s efforts to re-engage in dialogue with Washington following a heated exchange with Donald Trump in the Oval Office. This incident has added further complexity to international relations as France and Europe strive to maintain unity in the face of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
