Orange Cyclone Alert: La Réunion Braces for the Arrival of Tropical Storm Garance

Vigilance is essential in La Réunion. In response to the approach of Tropical Storm Garance, the island’s prefect has announced the activation of the orange cyclone alert, starting Wednesday at 2:00 PM.

According to an official statement, this measure entails the closure of schools, daycare centers, and collective childcare facilities to ensure the safety of children and families. The decision also aims to encourage residents to secure their property in anticipation of the upcoming severe weather.

Currently classified as a moderate tropical storm, Garance could intensify into a tropical cyclone as it nears the island’s coast. Meteorologists have noted its unusual trajectory, moving west to east, contrary to the typical east to west movement of cyclonic systems in this part of the Indian Ocean.

Forecasts indicate that the storm could pass within 70 km of the island between Thursday and Friday, causing a significant deterioration in weather conditions:

  • 🌧️ Intense heavy rainfall
  • 💨 Violent wind gusts
  • 🌊 Rough seas with heavy swells

Météo-France expects the storm’s direct influence on the island to begin late Wednesday night into Thursday, with effects potentially lasting through Friday.

As a precaution, port activities will be suspended on Wednesday, both on land and at sea, and flight schedule adjustments have been announced by the international airport for Wednesday and Thursday.

Authorities advise residents to limit non-essential travel, secure their homes, and stay tuned to official announcements.
