An ambitious project, but a 12-year delay

The Flamanville nuclear reactor, after many years of construction, has been connected to the national power grid. Initially planned for 2012, it has faced a 12-year delay. The total cost has also been inflated, with expenses multiplied by four compared to the initial estimates.

Technical anomalies and design errors
From the beginning of the project in 2007, the construction faced several technical issues. Cracks in the concrete, faults in the reactor’s pressure vessel, and non-compliant welds delayed progress. These issues required years of work to fix, with complex solutions implemented to repair hard-to-reach welds.

Social tensions and a tragic workplace accident
In addition to technical difficulties, the project was marked by significant social tensions. Poor working conditions and the use of subcontracted labor led to conflicts. A tragic accident occurred in 2011 when a worker was killed after being struck by a crane.

A difficult outcome but an important technological advancement
Despite these numerous obstacles, the Flamanville EPR represents a technological advancement for France, capable of providing electricity to around two million households. However, the project is seen as a failure for EDF due to poor management and the exorbitant costs.

The future of the french nuclear industry amid challenges and hopes
Although the Flamanville EPR has faced delays and massive cost overruns, there is hope for the future of the French nuclear sector. New projects, such as the EPR 2 reactors in Penly, could mark a revival for the nuclear industry in France in the coming years.
