Trial of Stéphane Plaza: 18-Month Suspended Sentence and €10,000 Fine Requested

The Paris Judicial Court requested, on Thursday, January 9, 2025, an 18-month suspended prison sentence and a €10,000 fine against television host Stéphane Plaza, who is being tried for “habitual physical and/or psychological violence by a partner.” The alleged incidents, which occurred between August 2018 and September 2022, involve two of his former partners. Stéphane Plaza faces up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to €150,000.

The Allegations and the Accused’s Defense

Among the accusations, one of the plaintiffs claims to have suffered physical violence, including a broken finger, and described a climate of fear created by the host. Stéphane Plaza vehemently denies the charges, asserting that no violence took place. During the hearing, he spoke about the impact of the case on his career and mental health, revealing that he had faced profound psychological distress.

“In December 2023, I almost ended my life. What stopped me was the thought that this act would be seen as an admission of guilt,” he stated in court.

Prosecution’s Requests

In addition to the suspended prison sentence, the prosecution called for bans on contacting the plaintiffs, carrying firearms, and a fine deemed proportional to Stéphane Plaza’s income. The prosecutor emphasized the seriousness of the case:

“It is crucial to remind everyone who the victim is and who the aggressor is. A couple cannot become a zone of lawlessness.”

Testimonies and Defense Strategy

The defense sought to discredit the plaintiffs, but consistent testimonies from multiple witnesses, along with a third statement added to the file, weighed against the host.

Next Steps

The verdict is scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday, February 18, at 1:30 PM. Meanwhile, the case has sparked a heated debate, particularly concerning the handling of violence allegations in the media spotlight.
