Spectacular Heist in Tarn-et-Garonne: Van Carrying Gold and Artworks Stolen
On the night of Sunday, March 30, to Monday, March 31, an extraordinary theft took place in Verdun-sur-Garonne, Tarn-et-Garonne. A van belonging to a company specializing in the transport of artworks was stolen, carrying a valuable cargo of gold bars and coins, as well as numerous artworks and art furniture, including bronzes. The estimated loss amounts to three million euros.
Investigation Launched for Burglary and Organized Theft
The Montauban prosecutor’s office immediately opened an investigation for “burglary and organized theft.” Prosecutor Bruno Sauvage confirmed that the company’s alarm went off around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night. The investigation has been entrusted to the Toulouse gendarmerie’s research division.
Vehicle Found Burnt Out
Shortly after the theft, the van was found burned a few kilometers from the crime scene. According to La Dépêche du Midi, some of the transported artworks may have been destroyed in the fire, further increasing the damage. However, the prosecutor has yet to confirm these losses, stating that technicians are still on-site analyzing the situation.
