As the building is being renovated, the square has been cordoned off to allow the fire department to fight the blaze.
A “fire is in progress on the spire of Rouen cathedral”, announced Rouen mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol (PS) on his X account on Thursday July 11. This information was confirmed by H24 NEWS, which was present on site.
According to the mayor, the spire, which is currently undergoing work, caught fire for an as yet unknown reason. “All public resources have been mobilized”, he added. Videos of the incident are proliferating on social networks.
Two fire trucks equipped with hoses arrived on the scene, according to our observations. Access to the Place de la Cathédrale is forbidden, and the police are also on site.
