On January 28, 2025, Emmanuel Macron presented an ambitious renovation project for the Louvre Museum, called “Nouvelle Renaissance”. This plan, of exceptional scale, addresses both the aging condition of the world’s most visited museum and the pressures of massive visitor traffic.
A new entrance to ease congestion at the pyramid
One of the key measures is the creation of a new large entrance on the eastern façade of the Louvre, near the Colonnade of Perrault. This new access will help ease congestion at the glass pyramid and better distribute visitors throughout the museum. Fully financed by the museum’s own resources, this entrance is scheduled to open by 2031, following an architectural competition. The project also includes the creation of new spaces under the Cour Carrée to enhance the visitor experience.
The Mona Lisa in a dedicated space
Another major announcement: the Mona Lisa, the museum’s iconic artwork, will be moved to a “special space.” This space will be accessible independently, with its own dedicated entry, offering a more intimate and respectful experience of the painting. This new setup aims to reduce the visitor crowds around the artwork, ensuring a more peaceful visit and better showcasing the piece.
A differentiated pricing system for foreign visitors
Regarding ticket pricing, Macron announced the introduction of a differentiated pricing system for visitors from countries outside the European Union. Starting January 1, 2026, these visitors will pay a higher ticket price, helping to fund part of the renovation projects. The goal is to welcome 12 million visitors per year, up from 8.7 million in 2024, and to better manage visitor flows.
A project costing between 700 and 800 million euros
The total cost of the renovation is estimated to be between 700 and 800 million euros over ten years. The funding will come primarily from the museum’s own resources, including partnerships, sponsorships, and contributions from Louvre Abu Dhabi. The state will provide a more limited contribution. Some of these funds will be allocated to updating security and environmental standards and improving the comfort of the museum while preserving the artwork.
A realistic and funded project
Emmanuel Macron emphasized that this project is “realistic and funded.” He highlighted the need to preserve the Louvre’s integrity while addressing the challenges posed by its global success and physical condition. This renovation plan is part of a long-term vision aimed at securing the museum’s future in an increasingly demanding environment.
Once renovated, the Louvre will offer an optimized visitor experience, better management of visitor flows, and a safer environment for its precious artworks. A new era is beginning for this iconic symbol of global culture.
