Rain, flooding and avalanches: Météo-France places Corsica and Savoie under orange alert

Heavy Rain, Flooding and Avalanches: Savoie and Corsica Placed Under Orange Alert

On Wednesday, April 16, Météo-France issued an orange alert for three French departments: Savoie for avalanche risks, and both Corsican departments — Haute-Corse and Corse-du-Sud — for heavy rain and potential flooding.

Intense Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected in Corsica

Linked to the Hans depression, rainfall is intensifying across the island. “Corsica will experience particularly heavy rain, with more than 100 mm expected in some areas,” Météo-France warns. On the western mountain slopes, totals could reach up to 150 mm, while elsewhere, rainfall is forecast between 50 and 100 mm.

In addition to the downpours, powerful wind gusts are expected — especially over coastal headlands and mountainous regions — with speeds potentially exceeding 100 km/h. Local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant.

Severe Avalanche Risk in Savoie

Meanwhile, Savoie has been placed under orange alert due to a significant avalanche risk in the Haute-Maurienne and Haute-Tarentaise mountain ranges. The avalanche activity is described as “remarkable,” with spontaneous avalanches expected overnight. At high altitudes, fresh snow accumulation may exceed 1.5 to 2 meters near the border, and some avalanches could reach mountain infrastructure or alpine shelters.

The alerts remain in effect until midday Thursday for Savoie and through Thursday evening for Corsica.
