Pope Francis’ Health Remains Critical: A Fragile Situation Under Close Monitoring

Hospitalized since February 14, Pope Francis remains in a critical state, with a prognosis that remains guarded, as announced by the Vatican on Saturday, February 22. Despite being alert, the Holy Father experienced a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis in the morning, requiring high-flow oxygen therapy.

Serious Complications Detected

Medical examinations revealed thrombocytopenia (a decrease in blood platelets) and anemia, leading to the need for blood transfusions. Despite these challenges, Pope Francis spent the day seated in a chair, although he was in greater pain than the day before.

“The Holy Father remains vigilant, but he is suffering more than yesterday. For now, the prognosis remains reserved,” the Vatican explained in a statement.
