Explosion at the Russian Consulate in Marseille: Investigation Opened After Explosive Devices Thrown

Explosive bottles thrown into the gardens of the Russian consulate, investigation for damage opened, and reaction from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On Monday, February 24, several explosive devices were thrown at the façade of the Russian Consulate General in Marseille, located in the 8th district. According to the police prefecture, they were 50cl soda bottles, two of which exploded, causing detonations. No injuries or damage were reported. An analysis of the residues inside the bottles is currently underway.

Bomb disposal units quickly intervened, and a security perimeter was established around the consulate, resulting in the confinement of the staff, including the Russian consul. A man was seen fleeing the scene, but no arrests have been made.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs labeled the incident as “terrorist,” and a flagrant investigation for damage using explosive or incendiary substances has been opened. The Marseille prosecutor’s office has assigned the case to the Division of Organized and Specialized Crime.

French authorities have strongly condemned the attack and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the security and integrity of diplomatic and consular institutions, emphasizing that such acts are contrary to international law.
