Legislative elections: Emmanuel Macron says he will not resign, ‘whatever the result’

In an interview with Le Figaro Magazine, Emmanuel Macron answered a question about the possibility of his resignation in the event of a Rassemblement National victory in the legislative elections, which will be held in three weeks’ time following the dissolution of the National Assembly

Emmanuel Macron has ruled out leaving the presidency of the Republic ‘whatever the result’ of the legislative elections, according to the interview published in Le Figaro Magazine on Tuesday 11 June. The head of state responded to the idea that the RN could demand his departure in the event of victory.

“It’s not the RN that writes the Constitution, nor its spirit. The institutions are clear, as is the place of the President, whatever the result. This is an unshakeable principle for me”, said the President of the Republic.

On his return from Oradour-sur-Glane (Haute-Vienne), the President shared with our journalists his vision of the potential outcome of the election. He anticipates only two possible winners: the majority or the Rassemblement National. He does not see the Union of the Left, announced on Monday evening, or the Les Républicains camp as serious contenders.

Towards a debate with Marine Le Pen?

To obtain more seats, the Ensemble group could be reorganised and enlarged. Emmanuel Macron plans to ‘reach out to all those who are ready to come and govern and work on an ambitious synthesis’, without specifying the details of these agreements.

In this interview, the Rassemblement National remains the main target of criticism from the head of state. He is convinced that the score obtained by the RN in the European elections will not be repeated on 30 June and 7 July.

“It wasn’t a vote of support, there was no programme! The only proposal accepted was that of the double border, which its own promoter was unable to explain”, Emmanuel Macron stressed.

The President says he is ready to confront this programme. As envisaged, he agrees to debate Marine Le Pen ahead of the elections. ‘I am ready to defend our colours and our project’, he declared.
