The Republicans, although close to joining François Bayrou’s government, still condition their entry on additional guarantees. Laurent Wauquiez, leader of the LR deputies in the National Assembly, has confirmed his refusal to join the government team, while remaining open to his party’s participation

Ongoing negotiations

This Saturday, December 21, discussions took place between François Bayrou, Laurent Wauquiez, Mathieu Darnaud, president of the LR group in the Senate, and Gérard Larcher, president of the Senate. During these exchanges, François Bayrou reaffirmed his willingness to address the Republicans’ priorities:

  • Reduction of public spending.
  • Reaffirmation of authority and immigration regulation.
  • Work revalorization.
  • Decentralization and implementation of a major agricultural orientation law.

However, disagreements remain, particularly on budget and fiscal matters. The LR deputies are awaiting a detailed letter from the Prime Minister, which they hope to receive promptly to clarify these aspects.

Laurent Wauquiez’s choice

Laurent Wauquiez explained to members of his parliamentary group that he declined a proposal from François Bayrou. “The only possible scenario for me was Bercy with a clear roadmap, notably without tax increases. Since this roadmap was not guaranteed, I preferred to refuse,” he stated. He also mentioned that other proposals did not meet his expectations.

Despite this personal decision, Wauquiez emphasized that certain convergences exist between his party and the executive, particularly on agricultural and sovereign issues. Nevertheless, he remains firm on the need to eliminate all ambiguities before engaging his party in government participation. “For three weeks, I have maintained the same course: obtaining guarantees to move forward and allow participation with full clarity,” he added.

A strategic political issue

Laurent Wauquiez also reminded that “proportional representation is not a priority for the French” and wants efforts focused on the major expectations of citizens. The Republicans’ cautious stance reflects a desire to have an effective impact in the future government while preserving their political identity.

Thus, the coming hours will be decisive in determining whether the commitments promised by François Bayrou will overcome the Republicans’ last hesitations.
