A Hamas delegation is due to arrive in Egypt on Monday 29 April to discuss a proposed ceasefire in Gaza. The proposal, mooted by UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron at a meeting of the World Economic Forum in Riyadh on Monday, offers a 40-day ceasefire and the release of hostages and prisoners in return

Cameron described the offer as ‘very generous’ and urged Hamas to accept it, stressing that the eyes of the international community were on the matter.

The offer comes after nearly seven months of conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Mediators, including Egypt, Qatar and the US, have been working for months to broker an agreement between the two sides, and this new offer appears to mark a turning point in efforts to end the fighting.

David Cameron also called for a ‘political horizon’ for a two-state solution, with an independent Palestine co-existing with Israel. He stressed the need for the Hamas leadership to leave Gaza and for the terrorist infrastructure in the region to be dismantled. He concluded by stressing the need to ensure both a political future for the Palestinian people and the security of Israel.
