Gaza: Trump and Netanyahu say they are working on a new ceasefire agreement to free the last Hamas hostages

Trump and Netanyahu Discuss New Gaza Ceasefire to Secure Hostage Release

On Monday, April 7, Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu announced they are working on a new ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, aiming to secure the release of the remaining hostages held by Hamas. Following their meeting at the White House, the Israeli Prime Minister stated: “We are currently working on another deal, which we hope will be successful. We are fully committed to bringing all the hostages home.”

The former U.S. president echoed this stance, adding: “We’re doing everything we can to get the hostages out. We’re considering another ceasefire—we’ll see what happens.” Prior to this meeting, Netanyahu also spoke with Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

Fragile Truce Gives Way to Renewed Violence

The announcement comes amid the resumption of Israeli military operations in Gaza, following the end of a fragile ceasefire on March 18. The previous truce allowed for the release of 33 Israeli hostages—eight of whom were deceased—in exchange for roughly 1,800 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

Despite opposition from many hostage families, the Israeli government continues to maintain that increasing military pressure is the only way to compel Hamas to release those still in captivity. According to the Israeli military, 58 hostages remain in Gaza, including 34 believed to be dead.

Trump Revives Controversial Gaza Proposal

Donald Trump also reignited controversy by once again proposing U.S. control over Gaza. “It’s an incredibly valuable piece of real estate. Having the United States act as a peacekeeping force and take control of Gaza would be a good thing,” he said. He further suggested relocating Palestinians to other countries—a proposal that has been widely criticized by Arab nations and the international community.

Back in February, Trump sparked global outrage by suggesting Gaza could be rebuilt by the United States and transformed into the “Riviera of the Middle East.” His plan involved relocating its population to Egypt or Jordan—both countries firmly rejected the idea but continue to face diplomatic pressure from Washington.
