European stock markets plunge at opening, CAC 40 loses 2.78% after new US tariffs imposed

Global Markets Disturbed by the Implementation of New U.S. Tariffs

European and Asian Stock Markets Suffer Significant Losses, Paris Drops by 2.78%

Since 6:00 AM (French time) on Wednesday, the United States has imposed a new wave of tariffs on products from dozens of countries, causing market turmoil.

European stock markets opened sharply lower on Wednesday, April 9, following the morning implementation of U.S. tariffs on 60 countries. The United States has imposed tariffs on products from dozens of countries, with additional duties ranging from 11% to 50%, except for China, whose products are now taxed at 104%. In response, Paris saw a drop of 2.78%, Frankfurt fell 2.20%, and London decreased by 2.47%.

Asian markets are also tumbling. Tokyo closed down nearly 4% on Wednesday, and the Taiwan Stock Exchange dropped by 5.8%. The cautious rebounds of the previous day were swept away by renewed nervousness, following sharp declines at Wall Street.

Global Economic Repercussions: Oil Prices Fall, South Korean Currency Weakens, and European Responses in the Works

Oil prices drop by 3%. Oil prices accelerated their losses on Wednesday, falling by over 3% to their lowest levels in four years, amid concerns about global demand stability. During the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, WTI crude oil dropped 3.2% to $57.41 per barrel, and North Sea Brent fell 2.67% to $61.12, after briefly losing 3%.

The South Korean won weakens. While U.S. President Trump has promised “tailored agreements,” first with military allies like Japan and South Korea, the consequences are significant for Seoul. The South Korean currency plummeted to its lowest level against the dollar since 2009, at 1,487.45 won per dollar.
