Earthquake in Peru: magnitude 7 quake triggers tsunami warning

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has announced that a magnitude 7 earthquake shook Peru on Friday 28 June

This seismic event, recorded 54 km south-west of the district of Yauca in the province of Caravelí, at a depth of 42 kilometres, took place at 00:36 local time (7:36 Paris time), according to the National Seismological Centre (IGP) via X.

A tsunami warning has been issued by the Hydrography and Navigation Directorate of the Peruvian Navy, due to this earthquake on the Peruvian coast. The institution states that “this event will be constantly monitored”.

The Peruvian National Seismological Centre is also reporting several smaller aftershocks on X. An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 was recorded at 1.10 am local time, followed by another of magnitude 4 a quarter of an hour later. IGP readings indicate that these smaller earthquakes are frequent.
