Donald Trump Reiterates His Call for Canada to Become the 51st U.S. State
Following the imposition of new tariffs on Canada, U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed on Sunday, February 2, his desire to integrate the neighboring country into the United States. On his Truth Social network, he justified this idea by highlighting the benefits it would bring to Canadians: “much lower taxes, stronger military protection, and no tariffs.”
Denouncing the trade deficit between the two nations, Trump claimed that the U.S. is “subsidizing” Canada. He also defended the tariff increases imposed the previous day—25% on Canadian and Mexican imports, along with a 10% hike on Chinese products—while acknowledging that this policy might temporarily impact American citizens. “This will be the new golden age for the United States! Will it cause suffering? Yes, maybe. But we will make America great again, and it will be worth the price to pay,” he declared in capital letters.
In response, Ottawa quickly promised retaliatory measures, while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau firmly rejected the idea of Canada being annexed by the United States.
