The two heads of state now seem open to re-establishing dialogue between Moscow and Washington, despite the Kremlin’s initial preferences for Kamala Harris as US president

After his victory over Kamala Harris, Donald Trump received a signal of openness from Vladimir Putin on Thursday, November 7. From Sochi, the Russian president spoke of a possible resumption of contact with his American counterpart: “If someone wants to resume talks, I’m ready,” Putin said at a forum, also extending his congratulations to Trump on his victory. The president-elect reacted by expressing his willingness to start a discussion soon with the Russian leader, pointing out that he had already had exchanges with around 70 foreign leaders, including Emmanuel Macron, since his election.

Donald Trump, a “courageous man” in Vladimir Putin’s eyes

Prior to the election, Vladimir Putin had publicly expressed his preference for Joe Biden, then Kamala Harris, deeming them more “predictable” for Russian interests. Nevertheless, Putin has shown a certain respect for Trump, calling him a “courageous person”, particularly after the latter escaped an assassination attempt last July during a rally. “In extraordinary circumstances, people reveal their true nature, and Trump has risen to the occasion, courageous and dignified,” said the Russian president, praising his behavior.

According to American journalist Bob

According to American journalist Bob Woodward, Trump and Putin have had seven secret exchanges since Trump left the White House in 2021. During the pandemic, Trump reportedly even sent Covid-19 tests to Russia. This complex and controversial relationship, marked by praise and criticism, now seems to be heading for a new episode, with the prospect of a warming of Russian-American relations under President Trump.
