British singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has died aged 78

Marianne Faithfull, British Rock Icon, Passes Away at 78

British singer and actress Marianne Faithfull, an iconic figure in rock and 1960s pop culture, has passed away at the age of 78 in London. “She passed away peacefully today, surrounded by her family. She will be greatly missed,” a spokesperson announced in a statement released to AFP on Thursday, January 30.

A Meteoric Rise Marked by a Cult Hit

Discovered by Rolling Stones manager Andy Oldham, Marianne Faithfull rose to fame in 1964 with As Tears Go By, written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, which reached the UK Top 10. Her success continued with hits such as Come and Stay With Me, This Little Bird, and Summer Nights. A folk-rock muse, she became one of the leading figures of “Swinging London” and was romantically linked to Mick Jagger, gaining entry into the inner circle of the Rolling Stones.

A Descent into Darkness Before a Rebirth

The late 1960s marked a dark turning point for the artist. Drawn into what she would later describe as the Stones’ “perpetual circus,” she fell into heroin addiction. The 1970s were fraught with turmoil, including a suicide attempt, the end of her relationship with Mick Jagger, the loss of custody of her son, and a period of destitution in the streets of Soho. She barely survived an overdose, and her voice, damaged by years of excess, took on a new depth.

A Reinvented Career

In the 1980s and 1990s, after undergoing rehab, Marianne Faithfull made a powerful comeback with a darker, more introspective repertoire. Her album Broken English (1979) marked a major artistic shift, featuring songs such as Why D’Ya Do It? and a haunting cover of John Lennon’s Working Class Hero.

She continued her career in theater, film, and television, working under directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Sofia Coppola, and Patrice Chéreau. In France, she is particularly remembered for her role in The Girl on a Motorcycle alongside Alain Delon in 1968.

An Extraordinary Destiny

Born on December 29, 1946, in London, Marianne Faithfull had aristocratic roots—her father was a British officer and spy, while her mother was an Austrian baroness of Hungarian-Jewish descent. Her life, marked by soaring success and deep struggles, remains one of the most fascinating stories in rock history.

Marianne Faithfull leaves behind an indelible mark on music and contemporary culture, embodying both fragility and resilience.
