Algerian influencer Zazou Youcef, whose real name is Youcef A., was arrested on Friday, January 3, in Brest after posting a video on TikTok inciting terrorist attacks in France against opponents of the Algerian regime
The police were alerted through a report on the Pharos platform and apprehended the 25-year-old man in a popular neighborhood of the city. Placed in pre-trial detention, he will stand trial on February 24 before the Brest Criminal Court for “public apology for an act of terrorism committed via an online public communication service.” He faces up to seven years in prison and a fine of €100,000.
During the operation, another individual who was hosting the suspect was also arrested but was later cleared of suspicion and released, according to the prosecutor. During questioning, Youcef A. admitted to being the author of the videos, explaining that his message was intended for the Algerian community and specifically targeted opponents of the current regime in Algeria.
A History of Legal Troubles
Already known to the justice system, Youcef A. has previous convictions, including theft in January 2023 and acts of vandalism during the riots following the death of Nahel in the summer of 2023. He was found guilty of participating in the arson of a sports complex in Brest. Although sentenced to 12 months in prison, the sentence was not enforced due to his appeal. In April 2024, a Deportation Order (OQTF) was issued against him, but he was neither flagged as a security risk (S-file) nor identified for radicalization.
A Case Stirring Reactions
Separately, another Algerian influencer, known as “imadtintin,” was arrested in Échirolles for similar offenses. He is accused of “direct incitement to commit a terrorist act” and remains in custody, with his detention extended on Saturday, according to Grenoble’s prosecutor.
