NRJ wins its case against Cauet in their commercial dispute

On Friday, November 15, the Paris Court of Appeal upheld the lower court’s decision, finding in NRJ’s favor in its dispute with radio host Sébastien Cauet, according to BFMTV.

The case dates back to November 2023, when NRJ terminated its collaboration with Cauet following accusations of rape made against him. The host, who had initially asked to be reinstated on the air, then sued for 4.5 million euros in compensation for the termination of his contract. The Court of Appeal rejected this request, confirming the lower court’s decision.

A verdict contested by Cauet’s lawyer

Frédéric Lamoureux, lawyer for Cauet and his production company Be Aware, expressed his disagreement with the decision in a press release, describing it as “deeply disappointing” and “unfair”. According to him, this breach of contract imposed by NRJ has had serious consequences, including the dissolution of Be Aware and the dismissal of its 24 employees.

He also denounced what he perceived as the growing influence of media pressure on judicial decisions: “This verdict illustrates the excesses of a system where media pressure seems to take precedence over the fundamental principles of law”, he declared, regretting that the courts do not fully defend “the binding force of contracts”.

Still under investigation

Sébastien Cauet, who has been off the air since November 2023, remains under investigation for rape and sexual assault, with several complaints lodged against him. Under judicial supervision, he is prohibited from performing his job in front of an audience.
