Putin Calls for “Lasting Peace” in Ukraine and Expresses Willingness to Engage with Trump
Just hours before Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States, Vladimir Putin extended his congratulations to the president-elect while signaling openness to dialogue on the conflict in Ukraine. During a televised meeting with his ministers, the Russian president stated:
“We are also open to dialogue with the new American administration regarding the Ukrainian conflict. When it comes to resolving the situation, the goal should not be a brief truce, but a lasting peace.”
These remarks come at a critical juncture. For the past three years, Moscow has continued its offensive in Ukraine, gradually consolidating territorial gains. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian army, weakened by exhaustion and resource shortages, struggles to maintain its positions.
Concerns About the Future of the Conflict
Donald Trump, who has promised to swiftly resolve the Ukrainian conflict, has also criticized the military and economic aid provided by Washington to Kyiv. These statements have raised concerns within the Ukrainian government, which fears pressure to make significant concessions. Ukraine remains determined to join NATO and the European Union, goals that directly clash with Moscow’s strategic interests.
Against this backdrop, Vladimir Putin’s call for dialogue with the new U.S. administration appears to be both a diplomatic overture and a strategic move to solidify Russia’s position against a weakened neighbor.
