Mayotte on Red Alert Due to Tropical Storm Dikeledi

The French department of Mayotte remains under red alert until Monday evening due to severe weather caused by Tropical Storm Dikeledi, previously classified as a cyclone. The storm has brought torrential rains, strong winds, and significant flood risks, particularly in the southern part of the archipelago. The prefecture has warned of additional rainfall expected in the coming hours, linked to a monsoon phenomenon.

Key Points of the Situation:

  1. Critical Weather Conditions

    • Powerful winds and intense rainfall continue.
    • Increased risks of landslides and major flooding.
  2. No Casualties Reported

    • According to the prefect, no fatalities have been reported so far.
    • One person was rescued after their vehicle was caught in flooding.
  3. Reinforced Safety Measures

    • All travel is prohibited, except for emergency services and authorized personnel.
    • Seventy-nine emergency shelters have been opened to accommodate vulnerable residents.
    • The population is urged to stock up on water and food to endure the storm’s duration.
  4. State Forces Mobilized

    • Over 1,100 Civil Protection personnel have been deployed to Mayotte.
    • Teams are strategically positioned near sensitive areas for rapid response once the alert is lifted.
    • Overseas Minister Manuel Valls assures that all necessary resources are being mobilized to protect the population and coordinate post-crisis aid.

Impact on Madagascar

Meanwhile, Dikeledi has caused torrential rains in Madagascar, resulting in at least three deaths and leaving over 900 people homeless.

Vigilance remains essential in the face of an ongoing unstable situation, with the potential for worsening conditions in the hours ahead.
