Tragedy in Brétigny-sur-Orge: Woman Killed, Partner in Custody
A 34-year-old woman was found dead during the night of Tuesday, January 7, to Wednesday, January 8, in Brétigny-sur-Orge, Essonne. Her 29-year-old partner is suspected of killing her and has been taken into custody on charges of spousal murder.
Neighbors Raised the Alarm
Late Tuesday evening, around 11:30 PM, neighbors contacted the police after hearing cries for help and loud noises coming from the victim’s apartment. “We heard cries like ‘help’ and ‘save me’,” a resident, adding that several neighbors stepped out into the hallway to understand what was happening.
Another neighbor reported that the suspect was shouting incoherently, talking about “snakes” and yelling in a disoriented manner. When officers first arrived, they heard the woman’s screams from inside but were unable to enter due to a reinforced door.
A High-Tension Arrest
After forcing their way in, police found the suspect armed with two knives. He attempted to attack the officers but was subdued using a taser. He was immediately taken into custody.
The man, who has a criminal record, had previous convictions between 2014 and 2017 for violent offenses and other infractions.
A Grim Discovery and Traumatized Children
The victim’s body was discovered in the bathroom. Two children, aged 4 and 7, were also found in the apartment. According to Aurore Bergé, Minister for Gender Equality, the children are the victim’s daughter and her stepson.
The children, visibly bearing signs of physical abuse, were briefly cared for by a neighbor before being handed over to social services. “They were in shock, hungry, and kept asking to see their mother,” said a witness.
Investigation Underway
The local prosecutor’s office has entrusted the case to the national police of Essonne. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
Reactions and Disturbing Statistics
Minister Aurore Bergé praised the quick intervention of emergency services and the vigilance of neighbors but noted “failures” in the handling of the case. She plans to visit the area in the coming days.
This femicide is the third recorded in France since the start of 2025. In 2024, at least 92 femicides were reported.
