Claude Allègre, former Minister of National Education, passed away in Paris at the age of 87, his family announced on January 4, 2025

A geochemist by training, he entered politics alongside Lionel Jospin and served as Minister of National Education from 1997 to 2000, during Jospin’s tenure as Prime Minister. A long-time member of the Socialist Party, Allègre later aligned himself with Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007. He was also known for his controversial stances, particularly regarding climate change, which sparked intense debates.

His passing has been acknowledged by several political figures, including current Prime Minister François Bayrou, who paid tribute to him on social media. Bayrou described Allègre as an “original mind” and a “great scientist,” highlighting his courage and his ability to stand “alone against all.” Bayrou also emphasized Allègre’s deep respect for education and his “high regard for schools,” noting the importance he placed on the transmission of knowledge.
