Cyclone Chido in Mayotte: a provisional toll of 39 dead and thousands injured

The prefecture of Mayotte released a new report this Tuesday, December 24, following the devastating passage of Cyclone Chido over the archipelago on December 14. The provisional toll reports 39 dead, while 124 people are seriously injured and 4,136 others slightly affected.

In a statement, the prefect indicated that the mission to identify the victims of the cyclone continues its work, in collaboration with the mayors and associations of Mayotte.

A gradual improvement in infrastructure

Regarding electricity, the prefecture reports that 35% of customers, or approximately 20,000 households, have had their power restored. Prime Minister François Bayrou, speaking Monday on BFMTV, stated that the alarming figures initially reported will not be confirmed in reality.

In terms of water supply, local authorities announced that the commune of Acoua and the village of Choungui have been reconnected after technical difficulties. Since the start of the intervention, 630,000 liters of water have been delivered to Mayotte, with a daily distribution of 100,000 liters.

Ongoing humanitarian challenges

Despite these efforts, ten days after the cyclone, many residents are still without running water. This situation, deemed critical, has provoked the anger of the Mahorais, particularly during the visit of President Emmanuel Macron this Thursday.

The Minister of Overseas Territories, Manuel Valls, assured that Mayotte will be his urgency and priority, in order to address the pressing needs of the population.
