Two police officers are currently in a critical condition after being shot at the police station in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. The assailant, who had been apprehended following a violent attack, managed to take one of the officers’ weapons during his search
At around 10.30pm on Thursday evening, an individual opened fire, hitting at least two officers in the police station in question. The two officers were quickly rescued by their colleagues and then by the Paris fire brigade, before being rushed to hospital in an absolute emergency.
According to sources close to the investigation, the prognosis for at least one of the injured police officers is life-threatening, as is that of the assailant himself, who was also seriously injured during the confrontation. The Paris police prefect, Laurent Nunez, praised the speed and courage of the police in their response to the attack.
The suspect, described as agitated, had been taken to the police station after his arrest for acts of violence, including a severe assault on a woman in the Quai de la Gare area, requiring police intervention.
The current investigation is threefold: one for attempted murder of the woman assaulted, another for attempted murder of police officers, and a third, entrusted to the IGPN, for deliberate violence with a weapon by police officers.
The investigators will endeavour to clarify the circumstances of the incident, the identity of the suspect and his potential links with the initial victim.
