Paris 2024: a sporting, popular, and financial success beyond expectations

The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee (COJOP), chaired by Tony Estanguet, presented an impressive report on Wednesday, December 11, ahead of one of its final board meetings. With revenues of €4.480 billion and expenses of €4.453 billion, the event concluded with a budget surplus of €26.8 million, showcasing exceptional financial management for this historic edition of the Games.

A success without public guarantees

This financial surplus ensures that no guarantees from institutional partners, such as the French State, the City of Paris, or the Île-de-France region, need to be called upon. However, the organizers noted that additional costs related to security, fully covered by the State, are not included in this financial overview.

The triumph of public engagement in numbers

The resounding success of the Games, marked by extraordinary public enthusiasm, played a key role in achieving these results. Over 9.5 million tickets were sold for the Olympic events and 2.5 million for the Paralympic Games. Ticketing revenues reached €1.489 billion, including €156 million from hospitality programs. This figure exceeds the December 2023 forecast by €87 million and surpasses the bid project projections by €348 million—an achievement celebrated by the COJOP.

Thoughtful allocation of the surplus

The budget surplus will be allocated as follows: 20% to the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF), 20% to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and 60% toward promoting and developing sports in France. Part of the latter amount could be directed to the French Paralympic and Sports Committee (CPSF) to recognize the impact of the Paralympic Games.

With its blend of sporting excellence, widespread public support, and sound financial stewardship, Paris 2024 stands as a landmark achievement for the Olympic movement and for France.
