A week marked by precipitation and a drop in temperatures by the end of the week

Starting on Tuesday, the first showers will reach the Atlantic regions, before becoming more widespread from Thursday onward. By the end of the week, a cooler air mass will move in, leading to a drop in temperatures and snowfall in the mountains.

A week of variable weather

After a weekend of contrasting weather, mild conditions are predominant across the country on Monday, December 2. However, the week is expected to be disrupted by successive weather fronts bringing rain, stronger winds, and the return of frosty conditions. A cooling trend is expected by the end of the week.

Return of cooler air

According to Christelle Robert, a forecaster at Météo-France, a cooler air mass moving in from the northwest will influence the weather from Tuesday: “Temperatures will return to more seasonal norms.”

Initial impact of the disturbance

The first disturbance will initially affect Brittany before spreading along the entire Atlantic coast. “There may be some snowfall between Tuesday and Wednesday in the Pyrenees,” notes Christelle Robert. Isolated showers are also possible in the Northeast, potentially bringing some flakes to higher elevations, while the Mediterranean coast will remain sunny, despite strong winds.

Varied conditions for Wednesday

Wednesday will see calmer weather, but a significant temperature contrast will persist between the West and East, where frosts are expected as far as inland Provence and the Massif Central.

A new disturbance on Thursday

Thursday will bring a return of milder conditions with the passage of another disturbance that will affect much of the northwest of France. This disturbance will move westward overnight and will cover most of the country by Friday.

Cooling expected

Christelle Robert highlights that a relatively deep depression over the British Isles will bring strong winds to France, along with more rain on Saturday. Behind this disturbance, “much cooler air” will move in on Sunday, with temperatures remaining seasonable, or even slightly below average.

Next Monday will see a cold snap affecting even the South, where temperatures could drop to 8-9°C, compared to an average of 11°C. This situation may continue through Tuesday. Although forecasts may still change, “it is certain that it will be quite cold next week,” concludes the forecaster.

Possible snowfall

This return of cold air could lead to snowfall. “This situation is conducive to the development of a snow cover,” says Christelle Robert. Precipitation is expected on Sunday and Monday, bringing flakes to the Alps, the Pyrenees, and even lower altitudes such as the Vosges and the Massif Central.
