A family appointment for the American embassy in Paris
The US embassy in France is about to become a family affair for Donald Trump. On Saturday 30 November, the former American president announced the appointment of Charles Kushner, father of Jared Kushner – himself the husband of Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump – as the new ambassador to Paris.
Charles Kushner, described by Donald Trump as a ‘real estate genius’, will be tasked with strengthening ties between the United States and France, described by Trump as ‘our oldest ally and one of our strongest partners’. The announcement was made via Truth Social, the social network founded by the former president.
This appointment is attracting attention, not least because of Charles Kushner’s past. Convicted of tax fraud, he spent a year in federal prison before receiving a presidential pardon from Donald Trump at the end of his term in the White House.
With this appointment, Donald Trump is once again putting his personal stamp on American diplomacy, while underlining the historic relationship between Washington and Paris.
