Donald Trump: Verdict in His Trial Indefinitely Suspended

Convicted last May for accounting falsifications linked to a $130,000 payment to conceal an affair with an adult film actress, Donald Trump’s trial takes a new turn. Judge Juan Merchan, presiding over the case in New York, announced on Friday, November 22, that the sentencing, initially scheduled for November 26, has been suspended indefinitely.

The legal team for the president-elect of the United States has been granted until December 2 to file a motion seeking to dismiss the case. This decision adds further uncertainty to a case that, among the four indictments Donald Trump faces, is the only one to have resulted in a criminal trial.

A Historic Trial

In May 2024, after six weeks of deliberations, a jury of 12 citizens unanimously found Donald Trump guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records. The charges stem from an alleged attempt to hide from voters a payment intended to avert a sex scandal before the 2016 presidential election. This strategy aimed to shield his campaign against Hillary Clinton from potential damage.

The sentence, which could range from a fine to imprisonment, was initially set for July. However, it has already been postponed twice, first to September 18 and then to November 26, to allow time for the defense’s additional motions to be reviewed.

A Case Left in Limbo

For now, Donald Trump’s trial in this landmark case remains unresolved, leaving questions about its final outcome. This delay comes as the Republican, newly victorious in the November presidential election, continues to face multiple legal battles, fueling an atmosphere of political and judicial tension.
