Michel Barnier undergoes surgery: results expected within a few weeks

Prime Minister Michel Barnier underwent surgery this weekend for a cervical lesion, as confirmed on Monday by the head of government’s doctor, Olivier Hersan. The operation “went very well”, and the results of the analysis, essential to determine the nature of the lesion, should be available within a few weeks, Matignon said in a press release.

A rapid resumption of activities despite the operation

Despite the operation, Michel Barnier, 73, resumed his duties at the Hôtel de Matignon on Monday. He also intends to resume his public activities at the Council of Ministers meeting scheduled for Thursday. However, the Prime Minister’s office gave no further details on the exact nature of the pathology, nor on the circumstances of the operation.

The term “cervical lesion” remains vague, opening the door to several hypotheses, according to various medical experts. Some believe it to be a benign or malignant lump, potentially located in the thyroid gland or lymph nodes. Other specialists consider a bone lesion or cervical hernia possible, although the latter option is less likely given Michel Barnier’s rapid resumption of his activities, visible in his collarless exchanges with elected officials at Matignon.

The Prime Minister’s schedule shows meetings and get-togethers until Wednesday, although he will not be taking part in government question time, as he “needs to rest”, according to Matignon. The next few days should therefore be marked by an adjusted rhythm, pending the conclusions of the analyses which will determine the further care required for the head of government.
