US presidential election: tense exchanges between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump a week before the polls

As the presidential campaign enters its home stretch, personal attacks are multiplying between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. The latter recently described the Democratic candidate as “devoid of intelligence” and suggested that she should take a cognitive test. In response, Kamala Harris, interviewed on October 28 by CBS, said she would be willing to take the test if her opponent did the same.

“Of course I’m willing to do it,” she declared with a wry smile, before adding, ”I dare him to submit to the same test.” Harris, seeking to appeal to moderate and centrist voters, didn’t hesitate to fire back, calling Trump “increasingly unstable” and “unhinged”, claiming that he resorts to insults for want of real proposals for the country.

Opposing campaign strategies

While Harris is trying to rally the voices of moderates, including some Republicans, Trump is favoring a virulent discourse, aimed at bolstering support among his conservative base. At 78, if elected, Trump would become the oldest president in U.S. history. For his part, Harris embodies a younger, progressive option, seeking to establish himself as an alternative to the personal attacks and polarizing rhetoric that dominate the opposing camp.
