Train tragedy in Norway: one dead and four injured

A tragic accident occurred on Thursday 24 October in northern Norway, when a passenger train derailed following a rock fall, leaving one person dead and four injured, according to the local authorities. The incident occurred as the train was travelling between the towns of Trondheim in the west and Bodø in the north.

Passengers in critical condition

At the time of the accident, 55 people were on board the train. Unfortunately, the locomotive and the first carriage toppled over an incline, landing between the rails and a road below. Arild Woldmo, a police officer, told NRK that all those present were removed from the train, which had a total of five carriages.

To deal with the situation, three helicopters were dispatched to the scene of the accident, accompanied by a large number of ambulances and fire engines, as reported by the Bodø Rescue Centre. The images broadcast by Norwegian channels show the scale of the disaster, with impressive scenes of debris and emergency vehicles.

Clearance complicated by landslides

However, clearing the debris promises to be a complex operation. Boulders are blocking the front of the train, and other unstable rocks are threatening to fall onto the scene of the accident. Geologists are due to visit the site to carry out an assessment, which is necessary in order to determine the extent of the damage.

Norway, with its rugged, mountainous geography, is prone to landslides, particularly in spring when the snow melts. This tragedy is a reminder of the dangers inherent in this region and the importance of safety measures when it comes to rail transport.
