During his speech at the Republican convention in Milwaukee on Thursday, the candidate gave assurances that he would complete the construction of the anti-immigration wall on the border between the United States and Mexico, one of the flagship projects of his first term in the White House

A long-awaited speech took place on Thursday 18 July at the Republican convention in Milwaukee. From this capital of Wisconsin, in the heart of the Midwest, Donald Trump reaffirmed his intention to promote oil development in the United States and to halt immigration from ‘day one’ of his possible return to the White House

The former president promised to ‘drill like crazy’ and ‘close the border’, two priorities that he would tackle from the start of his new term. If re-elected, he also plans to reallocate funds dedicated to Joe Biden’s environmental measures, described by Trump as a ‘green scam’.

‘President of all America

In his speech, Donald Trump also promised to complete the construction of the anti-migrant wall on the US-Mexico border, a major project of his first term. ‘I’m going to end the illegal immigration crisis by closing our border and finishing the wall,’ he said.

Presenting himself as a leader of international stature, capable of resolving world conflicts ‘with a phone call’, he recalled his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. ‘I think he misses me’, he said, promising that with his return to the White House, North Korea would stop launching nuclear missiles.

Donald Trump also predicted an ‘incredible victory’ for the Republicans in November’s presidential election, accepting his party’s nomination at the Milwaukee convention. ‘I’m running to be president of all of America, not half of America,’ he said, seeking to position himself as a unifier.

A minute’s silence

Five days after narrowly escaping an attack at a campaign rally, the 70-year-old returned to the stage, not only as a survivor, but as the undisputed leader of the American right.

In front of his wife Melania and daughter Ivanka, Trump went into detail about the attack. ‘Blood was everywhere and yet, somehow, I felt safe, because I had God by my side’, he recounted. He observed a minute’s silence for Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old firefighter killed in the attack. Donald Trump then kissed the helmet of the victim’s uniform, paying tribute to his sacrifice.
