Legislative elections in 2024: Marine Tondelier emerged as a leading figure on the left, asserting her position as the new voice of the ecologists

Marine Tondelier quickly established herself as a leading figure on the left during the legislative election campaign, making a name for herself with her relentless calls for a Republican front against the Rassemblement National

Proudly wearing her green jacket, which has become emblematic over the last month or so, she has stepped up her media appearances, urging the French people to unite against this threat. Her presence will mark a key stage in a special evening on BFMTV, entitled “Face à BFM: un choix historique”, on 3 July.

Since the results of the first round, she has become one of the most ardent voices calling for the formation of a Republican Front, highlighting the risk of an absolute majority for the Rassemblement National at the end of the elections. She expressed her indignation at Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire’s refusal to actively support this strategy, denouncing his behaviour as that of a “coward and a privileged person”.

Originally from Hénin-Beaumont, a far-right stronghold since 2014, Marine Tondelier was brought up in a family environment marked by medicine. Her political career began in 2009 when she joined the ranks of the ecologists while studying at Sciences Po Lille. Despite a modest start in the municipal elections, where her list won just 8.52% of the vote in the first round, she persevered, becoming a parliamentary aide and candidate in local and national elections.

As National Secretary of Europe Écologie-Les Verts since December 2022, she has consolidated her position as an emerging leader, although her initiatives have provoked internal debate within the party. Her ambitious vision of expanding membership of the environmental movement to one million in five years has illustrated her commitment to transforming environmental policy in France.

Faced with the current political challenges, particularly the rise of the Rassemblement National, Marine Tondelier is the architect of the union of the left, calling for progressive forces to come together to counter this threat. Her determination to defend clear republican and environmentalist values, while firmly opposing the far right, is forging her political identity and growing influence on the national scene.
