Visiting the island of Sein, the President of the Republic sharply criticised the programmes of the RN and the New Popular Front

Emmanuel Macron on the campaign trail. During his visit to the island of Sein for the commemorations of the Appeal of 18 June, the President of the Republic harshly criticised the two main opponents of the presidential camp: the Rassemblement National and the Nouveau Front Populaire.

After castigating the RN’s “100 billion a year” programme, Emmanuel Macron also criticised the left-wing alliance’s programme during a discussion with French people.

“There’s no more secularism, they’re going back on the immigration laws that make it possible to regulate”, he listed. He added: “and then there are some completely absurd things, such as going to the town hall to change your sex”.

Outrageous” remarks according to Jean-Luc Mélenchon

This statement prompted an immediate reaction from the left. “The President’s comments on official gender reassignment are disgraceful. This possibility already exists in law. The President is unaware of the suffering involved for the people concerned”, reacted Jean-Luc Mélenchon on X.

“In the midst of a transphobic offensive, this is irresponsible and disgusting”, added Clémence Guetté, LFI candidate for Val-de-Marne.

The Nouveau Front populaire programme proposes, in its section dedicated to LGBT people, to “authorise free and unrestricted changes of civil status before a civil registrar”.

At present, it is possible to change your gender on civil status documents free of charge by applying to the court, as the public service website explains. To do this, you need to “demonstrate that the sex indicated on your civil status record does not correspond to that of your social life”. It is not necessary to have undergone medical treatment or surgery.

An “immigrationist” programme

Emmanuel Macron also said that the left was proposing “a totally immigrationist programme” during an exchange with journalists.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon reacted again on his X account. “What’s going on? Is he still in reality? Does he want to cut off the roads of resistance to the RN in the second round? Alert”, he wrote.
