Hunter Biden verdict: conviction for illegal possession of a firearm

After two weeks of trial, the Federal Criminal Court has handed down its verdict in the case of the son of the US President. Hunter Biden was found guilty of illegal possession of a firearm. The announcement comes on Tuesday 11 June, as President Joe Biden prepares to address the issue of gun regulation in a speech.

Details of the case and the President’s reaction

Hunter Biden, 54, a lawyer, businessman and entertainer, appeared in court in Wilmington, Delaware. The twelve-person jury found in his favour on all three counts, including lying about his drug use when he purchased a gun in 2018.

Although Hunter Biden theoretically faces up to 25 years in prison, an alternative sentence could be considered. This case represents the first criminal conviction involving a child of a sitting President.

President Joe Biden reacted to the verdict by saying that he would ‘accept the outcome’ of his son Hunter’s trial and that he would continue to respect the judicial process. He also expressed his unwavering support for his son, saying that he and First Lady Jill Biden would always be there for him.

Continuation of the legal proceedings

With less than five months to go before the elections, the Biden couple have made it clear that they support Hunter. The trial brought to light Hunter Biden’s past struggles with addiction, an aspect that the prosecution focused on.

Following the case in Delaware, Hunter Biden will also face an appearance in California in September on charges of tax fraud.
