Key points from Emmanuel Macron’s interview: European elections, Ukraine, Gaza

With three days to go until the European elections, Emmanuel Macron answered a series of topical questions from Normandy, where the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings is being commemorated. Here are the main topics covered:

On the European elections

Despite criticism from the opposition, the President insisted on the importance of talking about the European elections at this crucial time for the country. He asserted that it was his role to do so, stressing that ‘Europe has never been so threatened’.

D-Day commemorations

Macron expressed his satisfaction at the participation of the French in the commemorations, underlining the importance of this historic moment. He pointed out that these were probably the last major celebrations with veterans to be honoured.

Situation in Ukraine

The President reiterated his support for Ukraine, saying that the time had not yet come for peace negotiations with Russia. He announced the transfer of Mirage 2000-5 aircraft to Ukraine and the training of 4,500 Ukrainian soldiers, while insisting that this was not a factor for escalation.

Arrest in Russia

Macron confirmed the arrest of a Frenchman in Russia, specifying that this individual was not working for France and that he would benefit from all appropriate consular protection.

French hostages in Gaza

The President said that France had no news of the two French nationals who have disappeared in Gaza since the Hamas attacks. He called for a rapid ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and defended a two-state solution for a lasting peace.

Recognition of Palestine

Macron opposed immediate recognition of the State of Palestine, judging that the situation on the ground had not stabilised. He indicated that France would recognise the State of Palestine when it was a component of lasting peace and security in the region.
