Germany: several people were ‘seriously injured’ in a knife attack in Mannheim; the assailant was neutralised.

On Friday morning, several people were seriously injured in the town’s market square by an assailant, the German Chancellor said

Several people were attacked with knives in the market square of Mannheim, in south-west Germany, late on Friday 31 May morning, the local police announced in a statement.

The police said that the attacker had been shot and that there was no danger to the public, but did not give details of the extent of the victims’ injuries. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the attack as an ‘attack’ and expressed his ‘thoughts for the victims’.

According to the local daily Mannheimer Morgen, the attack took place during a rally organised by the anti-Islam movement Pax Europa. In a statement, the movement said that Michael Stürzenberger, a German far-right figure, was among the injured and was taken to a clinic in Ludwigshafen. The police did not provide any further details about the attacker’s motives or the exact circumstances of the attack.
