LFI MP Sébastien Delogu displayed a Palestinian flag at the National Assembly, causing the sitting to be suspended

During questions to the government on Tuesday 28 May, the ecologist and rebel MPs urged the government to take a firmer stance against the Israeli strikes on Rafah. The LFI MP for Bouches-du-Rhône, Sébastien Delogu, brandished a Palestinian flag in the Chamber, causing the session to be suspended

Chairwoman Yaël Braun-Pivet immediately suspended the sitting, describing the gesture as ‘inadmissible’. A meeting of the Assembly bureau has been called to discuss possible sanctions against Sébastien Delogu.

Sébastien Delogu criticised the answers given by Gabriel Attal and Franck Riester on France’s recognition of the Palestinian state, deeming them unsatisfactory. Green MP Cyrielle Chatelain and LFI MP Alma Dufour had also questioned the government on the subject.

‘I waved the flag because as we speak, children are being massacred by French weapons’, Sébastien Delogu told LCP after leaving the Chamber. He added that he did not care about the potential sanction, seeing it as a ‘medal’ and ‘pride’

Les Insoumis were accused by Gabriel Attal and Franck Riester of not recognising the crimes of Hamas. Gabriel Attal pointed out that hostages were being held, which Sébastien Delogu disputed, accusing the French state of complicity in the events in Palestine.

On the same day, the UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting following Israeli strikes in Rafah that killed 45 people. Spain, Ireland and Norway officially recognised the State of Palestine.
