To prevent strategic projects, particularly those related to defence, from falling under the control of foreign players, Bercy is seeking solutions to the financial challenges faced by the French group
French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire has announced a move to protect national sovereignty by sending a letter of intent to Atos, the troubled French IT giant, to acquire its strategic activities. This initiative is aimed at preventing the transfer of these crucial activities into the hands of foreign players, he stressed during his appearance on LCI.
Faced with the threats to a private group with strategic activities, the Minister said he was assuming his responsibilities and was committed to maintaining French ownership of these essential activities, describing the decision as a heavy one. Atos, which is in financial difficulty, owns supercomputers used for nuclear deterrence and contracts with the French army.
The company, once a French IT flagship and a technological pillar of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, has suffered an 80% fall in its stock market value in the space of a year, following the failure of two deals to sell off parts of its business. Faced with a heavy debt burden, Atos announced in April that it was seeking €1.2 billion in fresh financing, setting a deadline of 3 May for its creditors to submit refinancing proposals.
