Ukraine: The U.S. Urges Quick Decision on Peace, Citing Other Priorities
During a two-day visit to Paris on April 17–18, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio took part in crucial talks on the future of the war in Ukraine, bringing together the United States, Ukraine, and key European powers — France, the United Kingdom, and Germany — at the same table. The goal: to explore the prospects for a ceasefire, as Washington-led negotiations have stalled and Europeans seek a more prominent role.
But as the discussions concluded, Rubio delivered a blunt message: “We need to determine in the coming days whether peace is achievable or not. If it isn’t, we must move on — the United States has other priorities.” His remarks came at Paris-Le Bourget airport, moments before boarding his return flight.
Constructive Talks Under Pressure
Despite his warning, the American diplomat praised the input of his European counterparts: “I believe the UK, France, and Germany can help, push things forward, and bring us closer to a resolution. I found their ideas very helpful and constructive.”
President Emmanuel Macron also described the discussions as “positive and constructive,” emphasizing a shared will for peace more than three years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began. Talks are set to continue next week in London, underlining the importance of close coordination between allies — something Rubio called “crucial.”
A Diplomatic Turning Point
This Paris meeting marks a shift: for the first time, American, European, and Ukrainian officials engaged in a joint dialogue on the terms of a “just and lasting” peace. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot highlighted the significance of this alignment, noting Europe’s determination not to be sidelined in a process potentially steered by Washington alone.
Still, Rubio issued a firm reminder: “We’ll be ready to assist on the margins when you’re ready for peace — but we’re not going to sustain this effort for weeks or months.” A clear signal that, for Washington, time is running out — and that this war, ultimately, is being fought on European soil.
