Trump Denounces Russian Strikes as Ceasefire Talks Stall
The U.S. President expresses his dissatisfaction with the intensifying Russian attacks in Ukraine, as diplomacy struggles to make progress.
During a meeting at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump expressed his frustration with the escalating Russian bombings in Ukraine. “They’re bombing like crazy. I’m not happy with what’s happening,” the U.S. president said, highlighting his displeasure with the current situation.
Despite international pressure for a lasting ceasefire, negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv remain at a standstill. Trump, who had promised to resolve the Ukrainian conflict swiftly during his campaign, is still attempting to convince both sides to find common ground, but discussions have largely been unsuccessful.
A Fragile Ceasefire in Danger
In March, under U.S. pressure, Ukraine agreed to a 30-day truce without conditions. However, Russia rejected this global proposal, settling for a more limited ceasefire, particularly concerning strikes in the Black Sea and energy infrastructure. This ceasefire has already been jeopardized by renewed bombings.
On Friday, an attack on the city of Kryvyi Rih killed 20 people, including nine children, fueling anger and concern among Ukrainian authorities. The increasing strikes have led Kyiv to denounce Moscow’s inaction on the situation on the ground.
Negotiations at a Standstill
The talks seem to be at an impasse. The Kremlin has stated that several issues remain to be addressed before a comprehensive ceasefire can be reached. According to the Kremlin’s spokesperson, key concerns involve the handling of extremist groups in Ukraine and the country’s militarization plans.
Donald Trump also expressed his frustration after recent comments from Vladimir Putin, who spoke of the possibility of a “transitional administration” in Ukraine—a proposal rejected by Kyiv.
Diplomacy Under Scrutiny
Despite the obstacles, diplomatic efforts continue. French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Russia to cease hindering negotiations, urging a “ceasefire without conditions.” The French president urged Moscow to show goodwill, arguing that Russia was deliberately delaying progress in the talks.
