Macron on Marine Le Pen’s ineligibility: he recalls the independence of the judiciary and the need to protect magistrates

Macron Reaffirms Judicial Independence After Marine Le Pen’s Conviction

During the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, April 2, Emmanuel Macron spoke to emphasize three fundamental principles following Marine Le Pen’s conviction to four years in prison, including two years firm, and five years of ineligibility with immediate effect. Government spokesperson Sophie Primas relayed his statements.

Three Principles Reaffirmed by Emmanuel Macron

The President of the Republic first reminded that “justice is independent and must be respected as a pillar of our democracy.” He then condemned “the threats made against the magistrates” who issued this ruling, calling them “absolutely unacceptable.” Finally, Emmanuel Macron insisted that “everyone has the right to fair justice and that the law applies equally to all.”

According to information from BFMTV and Le Parisien, the Head of State also reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that litigants’ right to appeal is guaranteed. This issue is particularly relevant as the Paris Court of Appeal has announced the possibility of a new trial in the summer of 2026, raising the prospect of Marine Le Pen running in the 2027 presidential election. Marine Le Pen responded to this announcement by calling it “very good news,” expressing her hope of still being able to compete.

Support for Magistrates and Political Debates

Meanwhile, Prime Minister François Bayrou has expressed his “unconditional support” for the threatened magistrates, emphasizing that “magistrates must be protected in the exercise of their duties.” The president of the court that delivered the conviction is now under increased protection.

This case continues to spark heated debates, both on the merits of the judgment and its political implications as the next elections approach.
