Gaîté Lyrique: Paris police order evacuation of venue occupied by over 400 migrants since December

Imminent Eviction of Migrants from Gaîté Lyrique: Tensions and Mobilizations

Eviction Justified by Security Concerns

The Paris police prefecture has ordered the evacuation of Gaîté Lyrique, a performance venue occupied since December by more than 400 young migrants, most of whom are unaccompanied and without housing solutions. The decree, published on Monday, March 17, requires them to vacate the premises by Tuesday, March 18, or face police intervention.

Authorities justify the eviction on security and health grounds. They cite tensions linked to overcrowding, violent altercations among occupants, and the unsuitability of the venue for prolonged accommodation. If the order is not followed, law enforcement will proceed with the evacuation.

Protests Against the Eviction

In response to this decision, support groups and elected officials, including Paris MP Danielle Simonnet, have condemned the lack of dignified rehousing solutions for these young people. A protest was held on Monday evening at 6 p.m., organized by the Collectif des jeunes du parc de Belleville, with another demonstration scheduled for Tuesday at 6 a.m.

What Will Happen to the Migrants?

While some occupants have already left, the police prefecture has announced the creation of a temporary reception facility, without specifying how many migrants will be accommodated. Uncertainty remains over what will happen to these young people after their eviction from Gaîté Lyrique.
