In Riedisheim, a 42-year-old man has been charged with culpable homicide against his spouse after probably intentionally hitting his ex-wife with a vehicle. He was remanded in custody after colliding with his 33-year-old ex-girlfriend on Friday 17 May, according to information confirmed by AFP and H24 MEDIA
The public prosecutor’s office said on Saturday 19 May that the suspect was in custody and that he would be questioned that day and the following day. The victim was taken to hospital with multiple injuries and died that evening.
The man, already convicted of domestic violence, had been forbidden to have contact with the victim since his release from prison last April. The tragedy began with blows inflicted by the ex-husband, followed by the woman’s hospitalisation. After leaving hospital, she met up with her ex-husband and had a chat with him in his car. After getting out of the car, the man, still at the wheel, drove away before intentionally hitting her again, according to several witnesses.
On average, a woman is murdered every three days in France. According to the Minister of Justice, Éric Dupond-Moretti, there will be 118 feminicides in 2022 and 94 in 2023, a drop that feminist associations are cautiously welcoming.
