Washington steps up its support for Kiev: peace agreements and dialogue with Moscow in the coming days

Agreements for Peace in Ukraine: US-Ukrainian Progress and Pressure on Moscow

During a crucial meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine and the United States announced several measures to ease the conflict with Russia. Washington decided to immediately lift the suspension of its military aid to Kyiv, while proposing a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine accepted. Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed this initiative while calling on the United States to persuade Russia to adhere to it. This announcement comes after months of escalating tensions and diplomatic deadlock.

Intensified Diplomatic Efforts

Donald Trump announced that he plans to speak directly with Vladimir Putin to try to unblock the situation. This contact, which could take place in the coming days, raises cautious hopes for a possible de-escalation of the conflict. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Macron and European leaders welcomed the ceasefire proposal, emphasizing the need for a lasting agreement. In Paris, discussions were launched to plan long-term security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement, with participation from the European G5 countries and NATO representatives.

Ongoing Attacks and Persistent Tensions

Despite these diplomatic advances, violence persists on the ground. Ukraine has intensified its drone strikes on Russian territory, targeting Moscow and its border regions, with more than 300 drones launched in a single night. According to Kyiv, these actions aim to push Russia to consider an aerial truce by demonstrating its ability to strike deep into Russian soil. Russia responded by strengthening its air defenses while leaving the threat of retaliation looming.

Toward an Agreement on Ukrainian Minerals

Beyond military issues, the two countries agreed to accelerate discussions on a deal concerning the exploitation of Ukrainian mineral resources, which had been suspended since a tense meeting between Trump and Zelensky in late February. This agreement, crucial for Ukraine’s economy and for Western industrial supplies, could serve as an additional bargaining chip with Moscow.

A Fragile Hope for Peace

Although the path to peace remains uncertain, these talks represent a significant step forward. The coming days will be decisive, as Washington seeks to convince Moscow to accept the truce while strengthening its military and diplomatic support for Ukraine. The Ukrainian president, for his part, stated that his country is ready to do whatever it takes to achieve a just and lasting peace, while maintaining pressure on the front lines to preserve the strategic advantage gained in recent months.
