Donald Trump’s speech to Congress: tariffs, tribute to Elon Musk and ambitions to reclaim Greenland

Donald Trump Faces Congress: Marathon Speech of Expansionist Ambitions, Economic Shock, and International Provocations

On the night of Tuesday, March 4 to Wednesday, March 5, the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump, delivered a historic 1 hour and 40-minute speech before American senators and representatives. He took advantage of this first address since his return to power to lay out his vision of the “American dream,” while reiterating his expansionist ambitions and multiplying shocking economic announcements.

A Crusade Against Taxes and Regulations

On the economic front, Trump proposed extending the tax cuts from his first term and eliminating taxes on tips and overtime pay. He stated his intention to scrap ten regulations for every new one adopted and accused his predecessor, Joe Biden, of leaving behind an “economic disaster,” citing the spike in egg prices due to avian flu.

Tribute to Elon Musk and Bureaucratic Purge

Trump gave a standing ovation to Elon Musk, appointed head of the “Department of Government Efficiency.” He also promised to immediately fire the “hundreds of thousands” of civil servants he accused of no longer showing up to work.

Greenland and the Panama Canal in the Crosshairs

On the international stage, Trump reaffirmed his intention to annex Greenland for “national security,” promising wealth and prosperity to its inhabitants. He also announced that the United States had begun to “take back control” of the Panama Canal, presenting it as a lever of strategic power.

Embracing Trade Tensions

Trump defended his tariffs, even at the cost of causing economic “disruptions,” asserting that these measures aimed to “make America rich again.” Canada, a target of these tariffs, sees it as a strategy of weakening to facilitate annexation, a scenario Trump has publicly mentioned before.

Ukraine Briefly Mentioned

Despite the ongoing war, Trump spoke little about Ukraine, merely stating that he had received a letter from Zelensky ready to negotiate and cede mining contracts to the United States.

Democratic Opposition and a Turbulent Session

The speech was marked by Democratic protests: a discreetly raised sign reading “This is not normal,” a Texan representative expelled for interrupting Trump, and signs accusing Elon Musk of “theft.”

This speech, oscillating between aggressive domestic reforms and assertive foreign policy, once again confirmed Donald Trump’s determination to reshape the United States in his image: conquering, protectionist, and indifferent to international conventions.
