Mohamed Amra under close surveillance and in solitary confinement at the Condé-sur-Sarthe high-security prison

Mohamed Amra Incarcerated in the High-Security Prison of Condé-sur-Sarthe

The Drug Trafficker Placed in Isolation After His Return to France

After nine months on the run, Mohamed Amra, the former most wanted man in France, was incarcerated during the night of February 25-26, 2025, at the Condé-sur-Sarthe prison in the Orne region. This transfer marked the end of a manhunt that concluded in Romania, where he was arrested following a journey marked by the deaths of two prison officers. Accompanied by the GIGN, he was transferred by helicopter under high security and immediately placed in isolation at one of the most secure prisons in the country.

An Ultra-Secure Prison
Detention Conditions Strengthened for the Most Dangerous Criminals

The Condé-sur-Sarthe prison is renowned for its exceptional security measures. This penitentiary facility is equipped with individual cells, enhanced surveillance systems, including cameras, and perimeter walls ranging from 8 to 12 meters high. It has already housed notorious criminals such as Youssouf Fofana, Redoine Faïd, and Tony Meilhon. Additionally, the prison is among the facilities considered for housing the country’s most dangerous drug traffickers, as part of a project by Gérald Darmanin, the Minister of Justice, scheduled for implementation in July 2025.

Strict Measures to Limit Risks
Total Isolation and Increased Surveillance

Upon arrival, Mohamed Amra was immediately placed in isolation, a decision made to prevent him from continuing his criminal activities from his cell. This extremely strict detention regime includes near-daily searches, a ban on interacting with other prisoners, and harsh detention conditions. He will only be allowed out of his cell for his trial. Charged with multiple murders in an organized gang, attempted murders, escape, and other crimes, Amra remained silent during his first appearance before the judges.

Condé-sur-Sarthe prison, in addition to its central role in managing high-profile criminals, remains a benchmark for prison security in France, an essential element in the management of inmates of such high profile.
